Video stillsReplay (Screen Time) explores the shifting nature of play in a world increasingly mediated by screens. Constructed from found 3D assets sourced online, the work brings together digital objects resonant with the artist’s own childhood toys. Some appear indexical, scanned directly from worn, real-world items marked by cracks and scratches, while others remain pristine, idealised renderings of playthings that never truly existed.
Layered into a looping sequence, these digital relics form a meditation on memory, nostalgia, and the tension between material imperfection and virtual perfection. The work also reflects on the cultural weight of “screen time” in contemporary childhood, its ubiquity, its contested developmental impact, and its hidden ecological footprint. What energy is consumed by devices that serve as today’s toys? What traces of digital play will remain when screens themselves become obsolete?
By combining fragments of past and present into a slow, cyclical rhythm, Replay (Screen Time) invites viewers to reflect on what is lost, remembered, or consumed in the process of play. It asks whether the devices of our era, iPads, consoles, and digital interfaces will one day carry the same nostalgic aura as the toys of the past.
